Coffee as a Natural Pigment: More Than Just a Brown Stain
Coffee is often associated with staining paper, but I wanted to look at it from a different perspective. Could such a familiar material become part of an artist’s palette? How does it compare with other natural pigments and dyes?
Unlike highly saturated plant pigments, coffee produces warm, transparent layers that are subtle rather than vibrant. Its strength lies not in intense colour but in the depth and character it can bring to a painting or surface.
(Add your observations here. Mention washes, layering, transparency, granulation, permanence, or your own experience.)
Exploring materials like coffee reminds me that natural pigments are not only about finding new colours. They are also about understanding the materials we encounter every day and discovering creative possibilities within them.
