Enter the flow...

Long before there was a studio, the foundation was laid through an exploration of different art forms, materials, and mediums. Along the way, a series of hand-painted stones, expressing stories, emotions, and hope, came to be known as Speaking Stones. As the practice found its direction in clay, the name Speaking Stones became a tribute to the beginnings, honouring the journey that has shaped, and continues to shape, both the art and the artist.

The making of a Piece

Our process begins outdoors..Every ceramic piece begins as a lump of clay, but reaching its final form is a gradual process. The clay is first prepared and shaped, either on the potter’s wheel or by hand. Once it has dried to the right stage, it is carefully trimmed, polished, fired, glazed, and then fired once again! phew!! Each stage depends on the one before it, and none can be rushed without compromising the final result.

Even after years of experience, no firing is ever entirely predictable. Small variations in temperature, atmosphere, materials, or placement inside the kiln can influence the outcome. Some pieces emerge exactly as imagined, while others become lessons that shape the next firing. Every firing offers new lessons, unexpected outcomes, and opportunities to refine the process. It is these small variations that honour the individuality of each piece, making no two pieces exactly alike.

At Speaking Stones, we choose thoughtful craftsmanship over mass production. A handmade ceramic piece is shaped not in hours, but across days and often weeks, with every stage demanding its own time. Every piece is made individually, allowing time for careful making, observation, and refinement. Whether functional or sculptural, each work is created with the intention of bringing beauty, purpose, and a deeper appreciation for the time, skill, and care behind handmade ceramics.

“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.”
